Maurice Campbell was born and raised in St. Catherine, Jamaica and first came to the United States of America in 1998 to continue his High School education, which began at the prestigious St. Jago High School in Jamaica. St. Jago High School has produced some of the best athletes out of Jamaica, such as Bertland Cameron (who along with John Senti, later became one of Maurice’s coaches) and Kerron Stewart. While representing St. Jago and Jamaica in Track and Field, Maurice competed internationally and won numerous medals in his specialty the 400m. While representing Boyd H. Anderson High School, Maurice was a finalist for the Florida High School State Championships and was awarded a track scholarship to Southwestern Christian College where he pursued an Associate Degree in Computer Science. While there, he was awarded All American honors as part of the 4 x 100m relay team and in the 4 x 400m and the 400m races.
In 2003, Maurice returned to Florida where he pursued a career in track and field as a pro athlete, being coached by Dennis Mitchell, one of the greatest sprinters of all time. During this time, Maurice also worked as a part-time mentor at Eckerd Youth Alternatives and took part in various track meets locally and internationally. In 2011 Maurice trained with his old coach Bert Cameron at the Racers Track Club, where he increased his knowledge of the fundamentals and technicalities in track and field. In 2013, Maurice launched his first venture, a training company, PT One and One under the advisement of Mr. Conrad Jackson and Mr. Christopher Campbell. He also received coaching guidance from Glen Mills OD, former coach of Usain Bolt.
In 2016-2018, Maurice served as Assistant Coach working with pro athletes such as Tyson Gaye, Nickel Ashmeade and Tony McQuay. In 2015 Maurice started working at Lake Minneola High School as a Volunteer Coach, and was promoted to Assistant Coach in 2016. In 2016, with major contributions from Maurice, Lake Minneola’s 4 x 400m girls’ team qualified for the first time to compete at the FSU Relays in Tallahassee where the team ran their personal best, winning first place in the event. In that year Maurice coached the team to run another personal best, breaking the school record once again. He was also promoted to the position of Program Director with responsibility for creating and directing the track program. Later that same year, under Maurice’s direction, and for the first time, a student athlete from Lake Minneola High School was awarded a full track and field scholarship to the University of South Florida. This, and a lot of other successes over the years resulted in Maurice being promoted to the Head Coach position at Lake Minneola in 2020.
In 2022, Maurice decided to focus his attention on the Track and Field Club he created in 2016. All the experiences and advice that he received over the years fully equipped him to develop athletes throughout Lake County and Central Florida, to achieve their highest potential by not only teaching the technical aspects of the sport, but also mentoring and motivating student athletes to believe in their abilities and never give up on their dreams.
Quentin Thompson, a member of the club, and coached by Maurice, recently solidified his status as one of the best Indoor distance runners in the State of Florida in the 3000m and 1-mile events, at 13 years old. Other standout athletes include:
Valentino Rudolph, who reduced his 100m time from 11.06 to 10.3, 200m time from 23.2 to 20.9, and 400m time from 55.1 to 47.4. This same athlete won the High School State Championships in 2023.
Tyler Azcano, who reduced his 100m time from 10.8 to 10.09 and his 200m time from 22.9 to 20.9 under the tutelage of Maurice. In July 2023 this athlete finished second in the US U20 trials with a personal best of 10.09 and went onto winning Gold, becoming the World Champion, at the Youth U20 Pan American Games in Puerto Rico.
Maurice has been married for ten years. He is the father of five children. The Campbells reside in Minneola Florida.
